Re-engineering for better governance

The Client:

One of the largest Federal research and engineering companies responsible for assisting the General Services Administration (GSA) in tracking energy usage to reduce energy costs and optimize energy usage.

The Business Challenge:

The client wanted to undertake reengineering to improve dynamic tracking and control for different energy usages. The current system offered limited utility monitoring thereby restricting functionality in the usage and hindering access to useful energy information. The system lacked the functionality to integrate with third party supplier systems necessary for monitoring energy usage and cost. The client wanted to implement advance reporting capabilities for the application while addressing budgetary constraints.

The Solution:

The SAI Systems team conducted an extensive study of the existing system and produced a functional GAP analysis report with a set of cost effective recommendations. SAI Systems also developed a prototype based on the understanding of the client requirements.

SAI Systems implemented the following enhancements and changes in the application:

  • Web based independent thin client/server architecture.
  • Improved user interface and security to authenticate users.
  • Advanced reporting with ability to export and generate reports.
  • Ability to track renewable energy types in utilities being tracked.
  • Audit trail - Keeps track of changes in the application.

SAI Systems has also implemented new functionalities like gathering of weather data from third party in the new application.

Technology:

  • Web Server: Microsoft™ IIS™
  • Middleware: COM
  • Web UI: Active Server Pages (ASP)
  • Database: Microsoft™ SQL Server 2000™

Client's Benefits:

The client realized the following benefits:

  • Interface with third party supplier systems.
  • Transaction tracking and control.
  • Compliance to Federal standards.
  • Dynamic tracking for different energy usage.
  • Reports for easy viewing to users.

The client has initiated Phase Two of the project to build a data warehouse of the application and GSA intends to use Phase One application to market it as a product to other Federal agencies

Industry Relevance:

Many large government departments like these use similar applications. With time it becomes essential that these applications are enhanced and relevant changes are made in them so that they can cope with the growing information needs of the modern days. SAI Systems partners with the client to provide them with effective solutions for their problems.
